Sales and Use Tax, A Visit from the CDTFA

Who: James Barrett

When: Friday, Sept 16th

Time: 12pm

Where: Zoom

If you came off the last quarterly sales tax filing questioning if you were listing the correct amounts in the correct schedule, you are not alone. Between the automated QuickBooks sales tax function and the updated CDTFA website, things can get complicated. In addition, the CDTFA is phasing out their limited access code login. They are requiring all accountants/bookkeepers to create their own portal for accessing their clients and there is a specific process to get this set up. If you have questions, this is your meeting because we have James Barrett here to educate us and answer them.

James Barrett has been with the CDTFA for 8 years. He began as a Staff Services Analyst and worked up to Information Officer II during the years as the Board of Equalization. After becoming the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, James moved to the Sacramento field office where he oversees outreach and education for the Sacramento, Redding, Fairfield, and Santa Rosa field offices.

Aside from answering our questions, James will help us gain an understanding of sales and use tax, district tax, taxable and nontaxable labor, as well as foreign and interstate taxability. Learn if your client needs a seller’s permit and how to use a resale certificate. Discover exemptions and deductions which may be available to you. Determine how AB 147 and the Market Place Facilitator Act affects your business. James will also be prepared to discuss user accounts, shipping, and any other question you may have.
